How to Make a SaaS Demo Video in 30 Minutes (Step-by-Step)

Thirty minutes is enough for one task, recorded once, with the click made readable. It is not enough for a tour of the whole product. Pick the job the visitor came to see, and leave the rest for a second video.
This pass uses DoDemo on Mac or Windows. The recording stays on your machine until you export. The free plan exports with a watermark. Pro removes it.
Minute 0 to 5: write the shot list on one sticky note
Write four lines.
- Who is watching. "A founder who needs the new report to be obvious."
- The painful frame. The number they care about is too small.
- The action. They click the report. The total fills the frame.
- The last line. "Download it" or "Start the trial." One verb.
If you cannot say the action in one sentence, you are about to record a tour. Cut the sentence until it is one click path. A longer script, with examples, is in the product demo script template.
Open the product on a clean account. Use sample data that looks like a small real business. Close Slack, mail, and any window that shows a customer name.
Minute 5 to 8: set the recorder
In DoDemo, pick the source before you roll.
- A window, when the product is one app and the desktop is clutter.
- A display, when you must show two windows.
- An area, when you only need a panel.
Turn the microphone on if you will talk. Turn system audio on only if the product sound is part of the point. Add the webcam only if this cut is a launch post and your face belongs in it. For a homepage embed, skip the face and spend the pixels on the UI.
Hide the recorder so it never appears in the take. Do a five-second countdown, then do the path once out loud without recording, so your mouse already knows the route.
Minute 8 to 14: record the task once
Start on the painful frame. Pause one beat so the viewer sees the problem. Then do the click. Move slowly enough that the cursor does not streak, and do not circle the button. Land on it and click.
Narrate cause and result, not a feature list. "The report is hard to read. The click opens it. The total is the number." Stop when the result is on screen. Do not keep talking through settings.
If you stumble, stop and record again. A second clean take is faster than editing out an apology.
Minute 14 to 24: keep the zooms and frame the window
Stopping the recording opens the editor. DoDemo has already built zoom regions from the cursor and the clicks. Watch them once.
Keep the zoom that lands on the result. Retime it if it arrives before the click. Delete a zoom that punches in on a menu you only passed through. If the automatic pass missed the control you care about, draw one. Presets run from 1.25× to 5×. A homepage demo usually wants the result large, not a 5× crop of a checkbox.
Smooth the cursor so the pointer glides instead of jittering. Put the window on a background and add padding so the page is not a raw desktop. Crop anything that is not the product.
Generate captions if this video will sit on a homepage. Many visitors never unmute. The steps are in how to add captions.
Minute 24 to 30: export and place it
Export MP4 for the page. Export a short GIF only if one step should loop inline. How to keep that GIF small is in lightweight GIFs.
Put the file next to one button that uses the same verb as your last line. If the video says download, the button should download DoDemo, or the equivalent action in your own product. A second ask belongs further down the page.
Watch the export once with the sound off. If the click is still obvious, you are done. If it is not, the missing piece is a zoom, not another feature.
What to skip when the clock is the constraint
Skip the logo sting, the company origin, and the settings tour. Skip a second feature "so they see the breadth." Skip color grading. The visitor needed one change, large enough to read.
If the task itself takes longer than a few minutes in the product, do not compress a twelve-minute workflow into a rushed voiceover. Record the one step that changes their mind, and link the long walkthrough somewhere else. Length choices, with Wistia's published ranges, are in how long a product demo should be.
